Fortified Medieval Church in Transylvania

Fortified Medieval Church in Transylvania by Dora Hathazi Mendes

There are some magical places in Romania, I had the pleasure to spend 4,5 years in this country, and was touched several times by places I never forget.

Fortified Mediaeval Church in Transylvania, is a ecoline painting about a historical church located in Sibiu county, (Cristian / Grossau / Keresztenysziget) in Transylvania, Romania. The settlement was first mentioned in written document in 1223, and the ancient church was built in the 13th century in the middle of the village, and got its present gothic style in the 15th century. The castle surrounding fortification was intended the protect the inhabitants from the assaults of the Turks, last time at 1658 unsuccessful, when the entire population of the village was massacred. The bright colors of the church is the result of my artistic touch and imagination, not representing the reality.

Pena Palace in Portugal

Pena Palace in Portugal - by Dora Hathazi Mendes

There is a magic place in Portugal which touch every visitor who ever had the pleasure to be there.

On the highest peaks of the Serra de Sintra in Portugal, stands the spectacular palace of Pena, an eclectic medley of architectural styles built in the 19th century for the husband of the young Queen Maria II, Ferdinand. In Portugal he was known as Dom Fernando II. the Artist King, because he loved art, nature, and the new inventions of the time. He was himself a watercolour painter, and devoted himself in his live patronizing arts. For Pena Castle Ferdinand appointed a German architect, to build his summer palace filled with oddities from all over the World. His lifelong dream was to create this enchanting, extravagant place, which was finished in the year he died.

Kingfisher

Kingfisher - by Dora Hathazi Mendes

Kingfishers are one of the most beautiful birds on Earth! With their amazingly colored feathers, and unique characters they are truth mesmerizing creatures. No wonder they inspired many artists in European and African art and culture. In some places  some believe these birds are displayers of the invisible world. In Congo these birds show to the hunters where the Elephants can be found, or in Gambia farmers has the signal from the bird for the start of the wet season.

In our short one year stay in Malawi, we woke up every single morning for the same scene . A solitary, silent, Grey Headed Kingfisher, still as a statue was sitting on our balcony fence. Just waiting, observing. I could watch him during hours, he didn't move, and only with doing exactly nothing, he just fixed me there, I was hypnotised, just wanted to be with him, just waiting, watching.
One little thing, I really missed when we left Africa! our Kingfisher on our balcony.

Honestly I started this blog to introduce my non-cat paintings, but I am not a writer, and mainly not a native english speaker as for sure you already noticed that, well sometimes it is difficult what to say. Two striped fishes a sardine and a sargo (my husband told this, he is Portuguese lol, so I cannot argue with him about fishes) hiding in the seaweeds of the ocean. There must be something about this little painting, because in a year, collected almost 6k visitors, so right now it is at the second position by my stats. Please take a look at it yourself.

Fishes with Seaweed is available as high quality prints (acrylics, canvas, wood, metal, framed, etc. ) plus related products such as totes, and pillows and many more from the Official Website of Dora Hathazi Mendes .

Giraffe With Fire

Giraffe With Fire - by Dora Hathazi Mendes

I have a thing about giraffes... A really strange looking animal, but meanwhile absolutely sophisticated! Their grace, their magnificent high, and beauty turn the clumsiness something unbelievable,  how such an animal exist on earth! Unfortunately while we were living in Malawi, we didn't meet one, so my experiences with them is reduced to zoos from my childhood, and images.

I made this painting some years back about a giraffe standing gracefully alarmed at a tree, aware of a strong fire is going on at African savannas. A warning sign that still life must go on, meanwhile changes are inevitable as humans are still not serious to face them.

What makes the painting also special, that the giraffe has a unique pattern , due to the light of the fire it has unusual green dots instead of browns. Also the pattern of the animal is used in the background as decorative element in gold, representing the fire as well. The colors of the painting are orange, yellow, red, gold, reflecting the warmth of Africa.

The Giraffe With Fire  painting is available to purchase as high quality fine art prints, and related products from the Official Website of Dora Hathazi Mendes which offers Worldwide Shipping.

Houses In The Oldtown of Warsaw

Houses In The Oldtown of Warsaw - by Dora Hathazi Mendes

I made this colorful ecoline painting as a surprise present to my husband, for our 3rd year of wedding anniversary. I usually sign my paintings with my maiden name only Hathazi Dora, but for especially to the occasion, i wrote my complete new name as the signature.

This time we were living in Warsaw, Poland, and I choose the object to my painting the old houses of Warsaw, because we were totally amazed the beauty and the charm or the old part of the city.

Houses In The Oldtown of Warsaw by Dora Hathazi Mendes

The Market square , in Polish language Rynek Starego Miasta is located in the centre of Warsaw, the Old Town. The anciente Market Place is dated back to the 13th century, the houses around the square first represented the Gothic style until the great fire of 1607. Then were rebuilt in late renaissance , then in late baroque style, but after in 1939 during the Invasion of Poland, the German Luftwaffe systematically bombed the district down. The buildings of today were reconstructed in the 1950s, with the aim to restore the appearance of the houses in the 17th century, when mainly rich merchant families lived in there.

My painting is a fraction of the houses of the Barss' Side (Strona Barssa) on the east side of the Market Square , which is one of the most picturesque area of the city with both charming and historical atmosphere.

Fairy Queen

Fairy Queen - Fantasy Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes

I was hesitating with which painting should I start the Karavella Atelier blog, should be the one I love most, or should I try to make introductions in order of creating? Both way would be quite impossible, I have always a different artwork in a special place in my heart, also would be difficult to remember the order of creation, so I decided just to jump to the middle, and do not think too much.

I chose for today my Fairy Queen painting, because for my pride and happiness, it was recently selected, and featured in the Fine Art America Fantasy Art Blog with other lovely fairy paintings.

Fairy Queen painting by Dora Hathazi Mendes
Fairy Queen - Fantasy Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes

Fairy Queen was the result of experimenting and playing with some Ecoline liquid watercolor ink, and silver tempera, I just used freely the paint, when I started to see a graceful creature on my paper. Then I added some stronger lines to the colors, to help the Fairy to appear to the untrained eyes, because as we know not everybody is able to see them.

"Believe in the Fairies, Who make dreams come true.
Believe in the wonder, The stars and the moon.
Believe in the magic, From Fairies above.
They dance on the flowers, And sing songs of love.
And if you just believe, And always stay true,
The Fairies will be there, To watch over you!"
- Unknown Author

It is an enchanting painting about a translucent, magical Fairy Queen with silver dotted wings, and transparent dress, walking graciously in dreamlike environment. As a print, or throw pillow, Fairy Queen is ideal decoration for bedrooms of girls, nurseries, or can be a charming fairy gift for everybody who believes in fairy tales and the power of magic and imagination.

First of all let me introduce myself. After the University I was working as a freelance designer, produced hand woven textiles, blinds, cushions for private customers using an antic loom originated from Finland.
Soon meanwhile of emerging deeply in my creative activity, I established family and accompanied my husband in abroad and lived during 10 years in 4 different countries (Bucharest-Romania, Warsaw- Poland, Sta Cruz-Portugal, Lilongwe- Malawi ) having children and seeking for inspiration.
As my loom would have been too big to take it with me I started to paint again, and to take photographs during the journey about everything what came across while encountering with different cultures. My main inspiration was my cat, as well other animals, wildlife, nature, and historical buildings, landscape, people, etc. Practically everything that touched me during our travellings.
I started to sell online originals, and prints of my art only recently, from 2016 March at Fine Art America (my official art gallery) and from September at Cats of Karavella Zazzle Store which is a niche store dedicated only to my cat art. And the lot of positive feedback from my new collectors, fans and followers, made me open the Karavella Atelier blog, where I would like to introduce you my previous artworks, and offer you a follow up about my present activity.
